LokiCosplay

I am burdened with glorious purpose... to make Loki's cosplay

dwarf-racistpartydad asked: Hey just want to say thanks for this lovely blog I'm starting my own Loki cosplay right now and after spending hours trying to figure out how it all fits together, this has saved me some major headaches. I was just wondering how/from what you made the shoulder pad armour things, and the other armour pieces of the costume? Thanks for all the help!

I made all the armor pieces from craft foam. It should be available at most local art stores for cheap or online like amazon (which has more choice and variety in color and thickness). A sheet is usually 89 cents at my local Michaels, under a dollar.  I usually just get the foam white because you can paint it whatever color you’d like and thickness of armor depends on what you are making. You can heat up the foam over a fire or with a hair dryer. When it goes limp, if you hold in the shape you want it will stay that way but still be bendy. If you glue backing to one side of the foam, it will help hold the shape and harden the side you glued the backing to. Backing is usually some kind of cloth that you cut out and wet and glue down, so when it hardens from the glue it will help strengthen the craft foam kind of like paper mache.

asgardian-angels asked: hiii :D i'm ripping my hair out trying to make my costume, because i tried to simplify it and now what i am working with is nothing like these super-precise design patterns online. can you help with the armor? like maybe a diagram of the shapes so i can cut them out right? it's posing a real problem for me.

i didn’t make permanent patterns for the armor pieces (which i should’ve done in restrospect but i wasn’t thinking that far ahead yet) but i can do some cut outs from paper again and post them online. I just finished midterms this past week, so i’ll do my best to get it up this week! =]

Loki’s Boot Covers

I have yet to see anyone make a post about Loki’s boot covers, so someone may actually find this helpful. Anyway, in what was apparently their ONLY act of mercy, Loki’s costume crew called it in a bit the day they designed these. As you can see from the first two photos, his boots are just ordinary boots of some sort (probably motocross boots) with a two-layer, fairly simple boot cover on them.

When shopping for a base boot, height is fairly irrelevant, because most of the body is built up from scratch. Look for the right type of sole and the right toe shape. Those ugly-ass things were the closest I could find within my budget ($25 at Off Broadway, and that was highway robbery, seriously, they’re fugly) , and I think they work pretty well.

The under-layer is the same textured pleather used on the jacket, and the over-layer is actually slightly different from the color of the rest of the costume, so I used some spare deer hide I had lying around (yes, I have that lying around at my house) instead of the upholstery pleater I used for the other components. I reinforced both pieces with craft-bond interfacing to make them stiff and prevent them from wrinkling too much.

The fourth photo shows the shape of the two pieces. All you have to do is sew some 2” elastic into the back of the first piece and the front of the first piece (the darker black bits are elastic) and add your zipper stop trim and flat black buttons in all the proper places. I see in the original that they’re either rivets or snaps, but the fabric store near me had nothing of that sort in the correct size and color, so I made do. I may update them if I can find the right snaps, as buttons are very easy to remove.

By the way, I apologize for the poor quality of the last photos, you’d be amazed how difficult it is to take photos of your own calves.

my pattern for the sleeves and how i made it generally.

I had cut out the pattern as one and drew on the stripes and lines and then cut apart the sleeves into three separate portions to sew individually and then put together to form a sleeve. There was the top part that was green, the middle part all black pleather stripes and the very end. The end is a weird shape that follows the curves of his armor.

smilingwiththebeatles asked: How long did it take you to make the Loki costume?

i only just ended school and needed to finish it before anime expo so i only had a span of about 3 weeks and i wasn’t able to fine tune or finish everything i wanted. i’d advice spending more time than just 3 weeks, it should be a long term project at least a month. Just figuring out how his costume worked and was designed and rewatching the movie and staring at gifs to figure it all out took me about a week… but i did that while at school during finals week….

mahalihoo asked: hey i'm making a loki costume and had some questions, i'm going to number them because i think there may be quite a few :) 1. how many components did you have for the whole outfit? (i was thinking to make a waistcoat, a long jacket and a cape along with shop bought trousers etc.) 2. did you make the whole black area out of faux leather and was it heavy to wear? 3. how did you do the templates for your size? ahh i'm running out of characters so i'll just leave it at that, your cosplay is brillia

components? like separate articles of clothing?

1-the outer jacket with 6 tails on it

2-the inner shirt with sleeves (i have a friend that thinks the could’ve sewed the sleeves onto the jacket but i suppose it’s up to you)

3-the pants that have metal armoring on the side

4-boot covers (which i don’t have pictures of)

5-the belts and the odd shaped flaps that go over his shoulders i planned them out so that i could take it off and pin it on as i wanted.

6-er the staff and his helmet although those aren’t really clothing…

7-his cape

question two. I didn’t make the pleather, it’s bought from Joanne’s but i did sew and cut everything together. It is much heavier than your usual articles of clothing or jackets but it’s not terribly heavy. You should be able to get used to it rather easily.

Question 3

1- I started out by first taking clothe that fit me and was a similar shape to what i wanted to make (for example i used my long winter coat and measured it to make a comparison for loki’s jacket) and then i measured my own body proportions at the major points. (with my compressor on) I measured across the chest, the shoulders, length of neck area, from bottom of neck to bottom of spine, hip bone length and so on. Making sleeves will take a bit more measuring of the same area more than once because you need to take in account for movement of the sleeves when you raise your arms. I combined my own body measurements with the measurements of my clothing and drew it out on large pieces of paper i taped together and drew out the shape from there.

and thank you for the compliment you can always continue the ask in another ask XD

Difference between Loki’s helm in Thor and Avengers
These come from two photos of very different quality so don’t take this as a comparison in texture, color, etc; simply regarding the shape of the helm.

just waiting for someone to reblog with a 4 paragraph explanation of the connection between loki’s feelings and his evolving helm

I’ll just shorten it to a couple sentences here. The angrier Loki gets the more his horns grow, kind of like Pinochio.
